The Porter Family - Alabama>Mississippi

Recently, while researching online for information about one of my Porter ancestors, I found a book entitled Some Alabama Pioneers, written by Madge Pettit, on GoogleBooks. Although I was unable to locate the family members for whom I searched, I did learn more about the early Porter family that settled in Lancaster County, Virginia and who migrated first to South Carolina, and then to places in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

If you are searching for southern branches of your Porter family, I highly recommend this book.

  1. Very interesting! I'll have to check it out. I haven't had much luck with the Porter side of the family. My Porter line lived in Yazoo county. Maybe a connection to yours?
Thank you for sharing your research with this site!

  6. My name is William Daniel Porter and i grew up in Oneonta Alabama. My grandfather (Lemuel Sumpter) grew up in the Tylertown Mississippi area. Dorris, Mildred, and W.M.(William Martin i believe) were his siblings. My great grandparents owned a sawmill in the Tylertown area i do believe. My aunt Mildred married a man Jewel Simmions and they had a carlot in that area too i believe. Aunt Dorris married a man named David Cushman Coyle. W.M. passed before i meet him. I always loved growing up and coming to Tylertown and eating pears out of aunt Mildred's pear tree. Anyways great research Janice. I will be reading that book as well.
